Term 3 Newsletter 2024

We may be over halfway through the year, but we’re still riding high on energy and excitement. The first half of this year has been groundbreaking for our OpenWisdom Community as a whole with new local community partnerships and student success on the incline.

Whether 2024 has been win-after-win for you, or less successful than you hoped, we’ve still got another half to go, with heaps of time to get back on track and the guidance to help you achieve your goals.

As we reflect and look forward, check out what we’ve been up to and what we’ve got in store for you in Term 3.

During the July school holidays, we collaborated with Georges River Council libraries to run a series of drop-in ‘English Marker Speed Dating’ and ‘Ask Me Anything about Maths’ sessions for local high school students in Hurstville Library and Kogarah Library and Cultural Centre.

Sitting in the community's favourite study spots, our team of mentors gave local students free and low-commitment access to educational pulse-checks and academic support across English and Maths. From essay and creative writing feedback to working through individual Maths questions, our tutors provided to the local community the same support and care they give to their own OpenWisdom students.

Returning to community spaces with OpenWisdom Education is a recognition of how learning is not a path walked alone, but rather one run as a relay where each member of the community passes on their experience to better the next.

With the success of our first round of sessions, we look forward to running more events to give back to the local community which has nurtured us these past 8 years.

Keep your eyes peeled for the next one!
In the meantime, check out other great events running at GRC libraries

Road to Summit

HSC students, with Trials done and dusted, it’s time to lock in and make that academic comeback with our annual Road to Summit program. The hard truth is that the best way to see growth between now and the real deal is through consistent and challenging practice under exam conditions.

Running from Week 7 of this term to the HSC, English Standard and Advanced students will gain access to fortnightly in-person exams covering Paper 1 and 2, along with individual feedback from expert tutors.

Chemistry and Physics students, alongside Mathematics Standard, Advanced and Extension 1 students, will begin in Week 8 with a weekly Mock HSC Exam and review session.

Trials didn’t go how you hoped? Or perhaps it was suspiciously easy? This proven HSC preparation method will smooth out all the bumps in your exam technique and help you master your content knowledge and application, setting you up for success!

The Limit Does Not Exist!

Put your Maths skills to the test with our upcoming Yr 11 Prelim Maths Challenge.

What better way to prepare for the pressure-cooker stress of a Maths exam than with a fun class that’s part mock exam, part tutorial and part trivia challenge. This is a challenge for Advanced and Extension 1 Maths students of all competencies. If you don’t get the question right the first time, no worries – one of our experienced Maths tutors will be there to help you understand how to get to the answer.

The student to gain the highest points will be awarded a prize! But perhaps the real prize is the skills we learnt along the way…

Decode, Digest and Incorporate Literary Criticism Seminar

paper document

In this interactive workshop, students from Years 10 to 12 tackled the advanced literary work of philosopher and critic Frederich Nietzsche. Guided by our resident philosophy expert and English Team Leader, Paul, students learnt how to unpack literary criticism; a skill often only taught to English Extension students but necessary both in high school and beyond.

Trialling different methods to decode and digest academic literature, students gradually built their own interpretations and discussed ways to incorporate their views on Nietzsche’s thinking into their own criticism of the literature they are studying in English.

When OpenWisdom began as a small team of dedicated tutors, little did we know we’d be presenting on the same stage as Georges River Councillor Nancy Liu and Federal Member for Banks David Coleman.

How to stop being so pressed

You’ve heard it before: “Just relax!” they say. Looming assessment due dates and exam blocks, subject selection, your manager at work on your back, sticky friendship issues, fights with your siblings … whatever might be troubling you, you’ll know that sometimes it can feel impossible to simply chill out. Maybe even a classic TikTok binge or video game sesh aren't cutting it anymore.

If you’re looking for evidence-backed ways to reach inner peace (even if just for a moment) check out these quick relaxation techniques from the Black Dog Institute. We know meditation is not everyone’s cup of tea, but maybe positive affirmations, or trying a whole body tension release, are more up your alley. You’ll never know until you try, so why not give one of the tips a go and let us know if they work for you.

Person looking at maths equations With over 8 years of experience in HSC education, our team knows that the HSC can often feel like a ‘black box’ for parents and students alike. However, that’s no longer the case for those who joined us at our in-person HSC Preparation seminars this term.

Over 40 parents and students attended our live presentations, where we detangled the confusion around the HSC, ATAR and the implications of subject selections.

Presented in the Level 5 study space at our Hurstville campus, our co-founder James Zhang and successful 2023 graduate Bassel Beydoun unpacked the finer details which are crucial to overcoming senior school challenges and setting HSC students up for success.

By popular demand, we ran an additional seminar at our Burwood Centre, ensuring everyone had the opportunity to hear expert advice from our teaching team, including English tutor, Paul Kim.

Maths just got an upgrade

Over the summer holidays, our Maths tutors have been hard at work overhauling our resources. Get ready for an all new look - an old friend, with a new face! No more grainy graphics, it’s time for high-definition learning.

Led by one of our top Maths tutors, Andrew Deng, this recent upgrade has brought more contemporary content and design into the equation (no pun intended 😉) so that you know you’re being guided with the latest and most applicable content and questions in an easy to work with format.

Revelance Engagement Difficulty

We want to make sure the questions that are provided are relevant to possible exam style questions but also interesting to students. Nobody likes doing questions just to fill time, so we want to make sure we have a variety of questions that incrementally become harder in order to challenge students to really think outside the box for those top marks!

MORE ENGAGING AND USEFUL DESIGN!

The team has carefully considered how to make our Maths booklets more appealing to students, and the design has been a huge factor!

Key updates include:

We hope this aesthetic and functional redesign engages and inspires you with more excitement to learn Maths! With Year 8 Algebra and Year 10 Non-Linear Relationships currently in the works, Maths students are in for a treat in 2024.

Ripple 2024
Meet the students making waves during the break
blue water droplet

Across the January school holidays, Year 7-10 students have been working on their unique ICT-powered interactive narratives and advanced literature presentations under the guidance of two of our experienced English tutors, Paul Kim and Bill Scott.

These two successful programs were the first in a series of Ripple courses, designed to help students build core skills for the year ahead during the break.

ICT and English unite!

The Year 7 and 8 cohort, guided by Bill, crafted their own narrative inspired by interactive texts, with some even designing choose-your-own-adventure style stories. Not only were students taught important literary and visual techniques, but they also developed their ICT skills, each coding their own digital text.

Being introduced to these multimodal text types helped students develop an appreciation for different textual forms. Multimodal assessments are now highly common in both junior and senior English, and ICT skills are highly sought after outside of school, so these students have no doubt laid the foundations for future success.

Paving the Road to Senior English

Our Year 9 and 10 students, under Paul’s teaching, embarked on a rigorous yet fun and engaging course, tackling advanced literature for the first time and learning how to master the viva voce format - a key senior English assessment at many schools.

The students each selected a text, from Andy Warhol’s Fame to Letter from Birmingham Jail by Martin Luther King. Unfamiliar contexts and advanced concepts were challenging yet fruitful learning moments for the students who engaged in intensive research to unpack their text and develop not only an oral presentation, but deep enough knowledge to be able to respond to marker questions on the spot.

Students concluded the course with a reflection piece so that, overall, they honed three key skills crucial to success in Senior English: independent research, synthesis of analysis and critical self-reflection.

Congratulations to the proactive students who successfully completed the 2024 Ripple course - your work will pay dividends!

Try to avoid caffeine in the afternoon and evening too. Instead, if you like tea, chamomile and even lavender are known to help bring about sleep.

It’s that time already, welcome to Term 3!

The OpenWisdom Community has been kicking some major goals lately and we’re keen to help you keep smashing yours too!

Our OpenWisdom community is growing all the time.

We’re really proud to announce that we’ve now hit over 200 concurrent enrolments! That’s 200 different pathways along which our tutors are guiding students, helping them to reach and exceed their potential across Science, Maths, English and more. This is the highest number of enrolments we’ve ever reached as a centre and we’re so glad to be together as part of our growing OpenWisdom community.

A milestone like this always reminds us to be grateful for the impact we have on not only your results, but your life beyond as well. That’s why we’d like to thank you for inviting us onto your pathway through high school. Without our community of avid learners, the aspirations we have would not be possible.

Term 2 Student Celebrations! 🤩

We’re stoked to congratulate the following students for their phenomenal results in Term 2. All their perseverance has paid off and there’s no sign of them slowing down!

This term, we celebrate a few students with perfect scores in their recent assessment. Chuong (Year 12) pushed right through a 90% goal to achieve a perfect score in their recent 2U Maths assessment, jumping a massive 15% from his last run. Matthew (Year 11) matched this in Advanced English, also achieving 100%.

No doubt you’ve been hearing a lot about ChatGPT lately, whether from your friends or teachers. It’s been criticised, idolised and demonised, but one thing’s for sure - it’s here to stay.

During the break, we ran our first Insight seminar, a series aimed to tackle contemporary topics within the high school education space. AI and Media expert Liv Di Costanzo covered everything from how ChatGPT functions, why it poses an integrity problem in schools and how to ethically harness AI-powered tools for personalised self-learning.

If you missed out, don’t worry, we’ve got you. For practical tips which will set you apart from the rest and even a live demo of some ChatGPT hacks, check out the exclusive seminar recording and our blog post.

With Trials done and dusted for most Year 12 students, the final leg of the HSC marathon has begun! This period of time is make or break for Year 12 students, and every year, we get hundreds of questions about how to prepare.

It can tough to figure out what effective study looks like after having finished all the content. Trials offer either a confirmation of preparation or a wake up call, and keeping up the motivation afterwards is easier said then done. Our special Year 12 Term 3 program is made specially designed to further challenge you with practice simulations that consistently acclimatize students for the Big Day.

From Week 7 onwards, Year 12 students enrolled in English will gain access to fortnightly in-person exams covering Paper 1 and 2, along with livestreamed feedback sessions. Those enrolled in Maths and/or Science will enjoy a similar weekly program starting in Week 9.

How’s Term 1 going?

With assignment due dates and exams fast approaching we know you’ve got a lot on your plate. But fear not! We’ve got some new initiatives to help you out and some motivation to help you push through.

Big changes are coming to how you access your learning, tutors and enrolment! We’re working with Skooly, an application designed to be a one-stop-shop for your experience at OpenWisdom. The mobile and desktop app features capabilities such as a shared class calendar, native messaging function and noticeboard. Skooly will be an interactive platform where both students and parents can have full visibility over their learning.

The system is currently be trialed in a pilot program across several students and tutors. We plan to fully implement Skooly starting from Term 2!

2022 HSC and 2023 Term 1 Celebrations! 🤩

2022 was another fruitful year for us as we received incredible news from last year’s Year 12 students over the summer holidays! Congratulations to all our alumni, many of which have gotten their top choices at university. We know you’ll keep on learning and keep on succeeding!

Year 7-11 Achievements

The year has also started off strong for our new Year 12 cohort. Congratulations to Bassel for his 87.5% score in his first Advanced English assessment of 2023. Well done to Ayden, who achieved a massive 24% improvement for an 84% in Advanced Mathematics. Finally, Anthony is to be commended for his 85% in Advanced English. Keep up the good work!

Lebanese Cultural Forum for HSC High Achievers

Students standing on a stage next to two flags and a man standing

As a community, we love to highlight and celebrate the success of students, so we were honoured to be able to attend the annual HSC High Achievers evening hosted by the Lebanese Cultural Forum at the Rockdale Town Hall.

We know that the learning journey doesn’t stop at the end of Year 12 and that the pathways after high school are varied. But as the successful HSC graduates themselves told us, a drive to follow your passions and harness the support from your family and friends are the key ways to hit your goals and succeed both in high school and beyond.

We know school can be overwhelming. Even when you’re hitting your goals, it can be challenging to find that ‘healthy balance’. The holidays are a good time to reflect on your habits, goals and mindset. We'll be offering private counselling sessions with a qualified psychologist during the Term 1 break!

You don’t need to be struggling to chat to a counsellor. Talking with a professional is a surefire way to deal with the challenges you might be facing at school. Our counselors can work with you to set smarter goals and build even stronger study habits to help you elevate your success!
